What Is This Goal Planner Template?

This free goal planner template has a sheet for each quarter where you list every goal with its category, target date and progress. Days remaining and status update automatically, so you can see what needs attention, and the annual summary shows your completion rate for the year. Download Excel, PDF or images, or print it blank.

What's Included

How to Use It

Pick a quarter tab and add a row for each goal you're working toward. Type the goal, its category, a target date and your current progress โ€” the Days Remaining column and the Status column help you see at a glance what's coming up and what still needs attention. Add extra rows for more goals, or add a new column if you want to track something the template doesn't already have. Use the Quarterly Notes section below the grid for a longer reflection on how the quarter went.

Once you've filled in a quarter or two, open the Annual Summary tab to see your completion rate for the year at a glance. When you're ready, download the entire workbook โ€” four quarterly sheets plus the annual summary โ€” as a single Excel (.xlsx) file, or print any page blank and fill it in by hand.

Break goals into daily actions with the daily planner and habit tracker, or put a money goal into numbers with the savings goal calculator. See how much time you have with the life in weeks calculator. See every free planner in the planner hub.

How the Goal Planner Works

Each quarter has its own sheet, plus an annual view. Every goal has a category, target date, progress percentage and status, and the summary at the top counts goals in progress and completed and works out an average progress figure, shown as a ring chart. Everything you type is saved automatically in your browser (local storage) on this device, so the sheet is still there when you come back, with nothing sent to a server and no account needed. Totals, completion rates and charts recalculate the moment a cell changes. When you want a copy, the export buttons build an Excel .xlsx file, a PNG or JPG image, or a PDF of the full planner, and the print buttons print one sheet or all of them. Because the data lives in one browser, use the Excel download if you want a backup or plan to switch devices.

Building a goal tracker with progress formulas and charts in a spreadsheet takes a long evening. This one is ready to fill in, so your weekly review is a two-minute update rather than a rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the Quarterly Notes section for?

It's a free-form space below the grid for a longer reflection โ€” blockers, wins, what you'd change next quarter. Add as many note boxes as you need with the "Add Note Box" button.

Can I print a blank copy to write on by hand?

Yes. Any sheet with empty cells prints as a blank grid ready for handwriting. Use "Print Full Planner" to print all four quarters plus the annual summary in one go.

Is this a SMART goals template?

Not a dedicated SMART worksheet, but it works well as one. Use the Goal and Category columns to write a Specific, Measurable goal, the Target Date for your time-bound deadline, and the Notes column to spell out how you'll know it's Achievable and Relevant. One row per goal keeps the SMART framework readable at a glance.

How is this different from a paid Etsy or Canva goal planner?

Those are usually static, nicely designed PDFs or Canva pages you fill in by hand or type into once. This one is a live spreadsheet: it calculates Days Remaining and your completion rate automatically, and you can still export it to Excel or print a blank copy if you prefer paper, all without buying anything.

How do I write a SMART goal?

Make it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Instead of "get fit", write "run 5 km without stopping by 30 June". Put the measurable part in the progress column and the deadline in the target date, and the planner shows the days remaining automatically.

How many goals should I set each quarter?

There is no fixed rule, but many people find a handful of goals per quarter, often three to five, easier to act on than a long list. Too many goals split your time. Use the category column to balance areas such as health, money, work and learning.
