How Do You Calculate a Percentage?

To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply: 15% of 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 432 out of 500 = 86.4%. Use the quick calculator above for any of these in one step.

How to Calculate Percentage of Marks

Divide the marks you got by the total marks and multiply by 100. If you scored 432 out of 500: 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%. For several subjects, add all obtained marks and all total marks first, then divide; don't average the percentages if subjects have different totals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for percentage?

Percentage = (part ÷ whole) × 100. To find a percentage of a number instead, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 30 out of 200 is 15%, and 15% of 200 is 30.

How do I calculate percentage of marks?

Divide the marks obtained by the total marks and multiply by 100. For 432 out of 500 that is 86.4%. With several subjects, add up all the marks obtained and all the maximum marks first, then divide, rather than averaging each subject's percentage.

How do I calculate a percentage on a calculator?

For 15% of 200, type 200 × 15 ÷ 100, or 200 × 0.15. To find what percent 30 is of 200, type 30 ÷ 200 × 100. Many calculators also have a % key, but its behaviour varies between models, so the division method is more reliable.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares a new value with an original one and has a direction, up or down. Percentage difference compares two values with no original, dividing their gap by their average. Use change for before-and-after figures and difference for two side-by-side values.

What is the difference between a percentage increase and a percentage point change?

A percentage point change is the simple gap between two percentages, so 4% to 6% is 2 points. A percentage increase measures that gap relative to the starting value, so 4% to 6% is a 50% increase. The two numbers are rarely the same.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by one minus the discount rate. A $76 price after 20% off was 76 ÷ 0.80 = $95. The reverse percentage calculator does this for discounts, taxes and markups.
