How Do You Calculate a Tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100: a 15% tip on a $40 bill is $6. Add the tip to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people to split it. At 10%, a $120 bill becomes $132, or $33 each for four people. The calculator does this instantly.
Tip Formula
Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100, total = bill + tip and per person = total ÷ number of people. For a $85 bill with an 18% tip split four ways: the tip is $15.30, the total $100.30 and each person pays about $25.07.
Quick Tip Table
| Bill | 10% | 15% | 18% | 20% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 100 | 150 | 180 | 200 |
| 2,500 | 250 | 375 | 450 | 500 |
| 5,000 | 500 | 750 | 900 | 1,000 |
| 50 | 5 | 7.50 | 9 | 10 |
| 100 | 10 | 15 | 18 | 20 |
Mental shortcut: move the decimal point one place left for 10%, then halve that and add it for 15%, or double it for 20%.
Split the Bill by What Each Person Ordered
When orders differ a lot, switch to Split by what each person ordered and enter each person's subtotal. The tip is shared in proportion to what each person spent, so at 20% someone with a 40 order pays 8 of the tip and someone with a 15 order pays 3.
How Much Should I Tip?
Customs vary widely by country, so treat these as common starting points rather than rules:
- United States and Canada: 15% to 20% for restaurant table service is typical, and 18% to 20% is a common default for good service.
- UK and much of Europe: around 10% is common when no service charge is on the bill. Check first, because many restaurants add one automatically.
- Japan and some other countries: tipping is generally not expected, so set the slider to 0% to just split the bill.
- Delivery, rides and salons: in countries where tipping is expected, around 15% to 20% is a usual range. Enter the fare or service cost as the bill.
Some people tip on the total before tax, others on the total after tax; both are widely accepted. Need other percentages? Try the percentage calculator, find a sale price with the discount calculator, or track eating-out costs in the monthly budget calculator.
