How Much Do I Need to Save Each Month?

Take your goal, subtract what your current savings will grow to, and spread the rest over the months you have, allowing for interest. To reach 1,000,000 in 5 years with 100,000 already saved at 8% a year, you need about 11,505 a month. Switch modes to see how long a fixed monthly amount takes.

Two Ways to Use It

Worked Example

You want 1,000,000 in 5 years, have 100,000 saved, and expect 8% a year. Your savings grow to about 149,000 by themselves, and monthly deposits of 11,505 cover the rest. Simply dividing the remaining 900,000 by 60 months would suggest 15,000, because it ignores interest.

Monthly Savings Needed for Common Goals

Starting from zero, saving at the start of each month:

GoalTimeAt 0%At 6%At 10%
500,0002 years20,83319,56218,750
1,000,0003 years27,77825,29523,736
1,000,0005 years16,66714,26112,807
5,000,00010 years41,66730,35824,207

Interest matters more the longer the timeline: over 10 years, a 10% return cuts the monthly amount by more than 40%. For short goals, the deadline and the amount matter far more than the rate. Prefer a weekly figure? Multiply the monthly amount by 12 and divide by 52.

How Long Will It Take to Reach My Goal?

In How long it will take mode, saving 15,000 a month at 8% reaches 1,000,000 in about 4 years 7 months, or 4 years 1 month if you start with 100,000 already saved. If your current savings already cover the goal, the calculator says so.

Emergency Fund and Down Payment Goals

A widely used guideline for an emergency fund is 3 to 6 months of essential expenses, kept somewhere safe and easy to reach, so use 0% or a savings-account rate. For a house down payment, use a modest bank or deposit rate rather than stock-market returns, since the money is needed on a fixed date.

If the Monthly Amount Is Too High

You have three levers: extend the deadline, start with more savings, or lower the target. A plan you can keep up beats an ambitious one you abandon after a few months. For goals several years away, add a buffer for inflation, because the calculator doesn't adjust for rising prices.

See where the monthly saving fits with the monthly budget calculator, invest a regular amount with the SIP calculator, or see how a lump sum grows with the compound interest calculator. Results are estimates at a steady rate, not financial advice.

How to Use the Savings Goal Calculator

  1. Choose the mode: how much to save each month, or how long it will take.
  2. Enter the target amount and what you have saved already.
  3. Enter the interest rate your savings earn (0 if none) and the time frame or monthly amount.
  4. Read the monthly saving or time needed, with the interest your savings earn.

How the Savings Goal Calculator Saves You Time

The monthly amount with interest needs an annuity formula; this gives it immediately and lets you switch to a time-based answer if the monthly figure is too high.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the monthly savings amount calculated?

The calculator grows your current savings at the interest rate until the deadline, subtracts that from your goal, then finds the monthly deposit that grows to the remaining amount. It assumes you save at the start of each month and that the rate stays the same throughout.

Why is the monthly amount lower than dividing my goal by the months left?

Because money saved early earns interest before the deadline. For 1,000,000 in 5 years at 8%, with 100,000 already saved, simple division gives 15,000 a month, but interest brings the real figure down to about 11,505.

How long will it take to save 1,000,000?

It depends on how much you save and the return. At 15,000 a month and 8% a year, it takes about 4 years 7 months from zero. At 25,000 a month with no interest, it takes 40 months. Use the How long it will take mode to test your own numbers.

What interest rate should I use?

Use the rate where the money will actually sit. Use 0% or a savings-account rate for cash, a deposit rate for fixed deposits, and a conservative long-term figure for investment funds. For important goals, a lower rate is safer: if returns beat it, you finish early.

How much should I save for an emergency fund?

A common guideline is 3 to 6 months of essential living expenses, such as rent, food, bills and loan payments. Choose the higher end if your income is irregular or you have dependents. Enter that total as the goal with a 0% rate and a short timeline to see the monthly amount.

Should I account for inflation in my savings goal?

Yes, for goals more than a couple of years away. Prices rise over time, so a target that covers a cost today may fall short later. The calculator doesn't adjust for inflation, so raise your goal by a buffer to allow for expected price increases.

Can I use it for weekly savings?

The calculator works in months. To turn the result into a weekly amount, multiply the monthly figure by 12 and divide by 52. For example, 11,505 a month is about 2,655 a week. Saving weekly gives a very similar result, slightly better because money goes in sooner.
