How Is SIP Return Calculated?

A SIP (systematic investment plan) invests a fixed amount every month, and each payment grows at the assumed return until the end. The calculator adds up the growth of every instalment. At 12% a year, 10,000 a month for 10 years grows to about 2,323,391, of which 1,200,000 is your own money.

The SIP Formula

FV = P ร— [((1 + i)^n โˆ’ 1) รท i] ร— (1 + i)

P is the monthly investment, i the monthly return (annual rate รท 12 รท 100) and n the number of months. The final (1 + i) assumes you invest at the start of each month, as this calculator does.

These are projections at a steady assumed rate, not predictions. Real fund returns go up and down from year to year and are never guaranteed.

Step-Up SIP Calculator

A step-up SIP raises your monthly amount by a fixed percentage each year, usually in line with pay rises. Enter the step-up in the optional field and the calculator compares it with a flat SIP. Starting at 10,000 a month for 10 years at 12%:

SIP, Monthly Investing and Dollar-Cost Averaging

"SIP" is the name used in India for investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month. Elsewhere the same habit is called a regular or monthly investment plan, or dollar-cost averaging. The maths is the same everywhere, so enter amounts in dollars, pounds, euros, rupees or any other currency. For a realistic return figure, look at a fund's long-term past performance in its fund manager report, and remember that past returns don't guarantee future ones.

Why SIPs Work: Cost Averaging

A fixed monthly amount buys more fund units when prices are low and fewer when they are high, which averages out your purchase cost. It removes the pressure of timing the market and suits people investing from a monthly salary. A lump sum can do better in a steadily rising market, but a SIP spreads the risk of investing everything just before a fall.

Common Mistakes

To find the monthly amount needed for a target, use the savings goal calculator; for a one-off lump sum, use the compound interest calculator. Read how SIP returns are calculated for a step-by-step guide. Results are estimates, not financial advice.

How to Use the SIP Calculator

  1. Enter the amount you will invest every month.
  2. Enter an expected annual return.
  3. Enter how many years you will keep investing.
  4. Optionally add an annual step-up to raise the monthly amount each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is SIP return calculated?

Each monthly instalment grows at the assumed return for the months it stays invested, and the calculator adds them up. The formula is FV = P ร— [((1 + i)^n โˆ’ 1) รท i] ร— (1 + i), with P the monthly amount, i the monthly rate and n the number of months.

What will 10,000 a month become in 10 years?

At an assumed 12% a year, about 2,323,391, from 1,200,000 invested. At 8% a year it would be about 1,841,657. These figures assume a steady return; real fund returns vary, so treat them as an estimate rather than a promise.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP increases the monthly amount by a fixed percentage every year, for example 10%, usually to match pay rises. Starting at 10,000 a month for 10 years at 12%, a 10% yearly step-up grows to about 3,374,326, against 2,323,391 for a flat SIP.

Can I use this SIP calculator in any country?

Yes. Enter your monthly amount and the return you expect in any currency, whether dollars, pounds, euros or rupees. It does not know any fund's actual returns, so check the fund manager report for past performance.

Is the return in a SIP calculator guaranteed?

No. The return you enter is an assumption. Mutual fund and market returns change every year and can be negative in some years. Use a conservative rate for planning, and review your plan once a year against what your fund actually delivered.

Is SIP better than a lump sum?

It depends on the market and on your cash. A lump sum can earn more when markets rise steadily, but a SIP spreads your buying over time, lowering the risk of investing everything just before a fall. For most salaried people, a SIP is also simply easier to afford.

Should I stop my SIP when the market falls?

Usually not. When prices fall, your fixed monthly amount buys more units, which lowers your average cost and helps when prices recover. Stopping during a downturn gives up that advantage. Review your plan if your goals or finances change, not just because of short-term market moves.
