How to Calculate Your Age From Your Birth Year
- Subtract your birth year from the current year. 2026 − 2005 = 21.
- Check whether your birthday has happened yet this year. If it has, that’s your age. If it hasn’t, subtract 1.
Example: born on 20 November 2005. On 1 June 2026 the birthday hasn’t come yet, so the age is 21 − 1 = 20. From 20 November 2026 it’s 21.

Why the Answer Has Two Numbers
A birth year alone can’t tell you someone’s exact age, because everyone born in the same year has a birthday on a different date. Between 1 January and your birthday you’re one year “behind” the simple subtraction; after it, you’ve caught up. That’s why forms that need an exact age ask for the full date of birth.

Age in School Years
Schools usually group children by an age on a fixed cut-off date, not by calendar year, and the cut-off differs by country: for example 1 September in England and Wales, and dates that vary by state in the US.
