What Year Will I Turn 18, 21, 30 or 65? (Lookup Table)

To find the year you’ll turn any age, add that age to your birth year. Born in 2008? You turn 18 in 2026 (2008 + 18). Born in 1961? You turn 65 in 2026. The only catch is timing within the year: you reach the new age on your birthday, not on January 1.

Below is a lookup table for common milestone ages, a note on the birthday catch, and the ages that matter for legal and retirement milestones in the US.

The Formula

Year you turn X = birth year + X

That gives the calendar year of the birthday. If you want to know how old you’ll be on a specific date, such as a graduation, a wedding or a deadline, check whether your birthday falls before or after that date in that year. If it falls after, you’ll still be one year younger on that day.

Example: born 20 November 2005. You turn 21 in 2026 (2005 + 21), but only from 20 November. At a party in July 2026 you’d still be 20.

Milestone Ages That Matter in the US

• 18: legal adulthood in most states, and the minimum age to vote in federal elections.
• 21: the minimum legal age to buy alcohol, and tobacco and vaping products, nationwide.
• 62: the earliest age you can start Social Security retirement benefits, at a permanently reduced rate.
• 65: the usual age of eligibility for Medicare.
• 67: the full retirement age for Social Security if you were born in 1960 or later.

Rules differ in other countries. In the UK, for example, the State Pension age is rising from 66 to 67 in stages between 2026 and 2028.

What Year Did (or Will) I Turn a Certain Age: Working Backwards

The same formula works in reverse. To find the year someone was born from their age, subtract their age from the current year, then subtract one more if they haven’t had their birthday yet this year. Someone who is 30 in September 2026 was born in 1996 if their birthday has passed, or in 1995 if it hasn’t.
