How Salary Tax Is Calculated: Worked Example

Take a monthly salary of Rs 150,000, which is Rs 1,800,000 a year:

Total tax: Rs 72,000 a year, or Rs 6,000 a month, an effective rate of 4.0%. Only the portion of income inside each slab is taxed at that slab's rate. Crossing a threshold never raises the tax on the rest of your salary.

Marginal Rate vs Effective Rate

Your marginal rate is the rate on your last rupee (11% in the example). Your effective rate is total tax divided by total income (4.0%). The effective rate is the better measure of what you actually pay.

Who These Slabs Apply To

These are the rates for salaried individuals, meaning people whose salary makes up most of their taxable income. Business individuals, freelancers and associations of persons (AOPs) use a separate, generally higher schedule under the Income Tax Ordinance. If most of your income is from a business or freelancing, use that schedule or ask a tax adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the salary tax slabs for 2026-27 in Pakistan?

For Tax Year 2027 there are eight slabs: 0% up to Rs 600,000 a year, then 1%, 11%, 20%, 25%, 29% and 32% on successive bands, and 35% on income above Rs 7,000,000. Each rate applies only to the income inside its band, so the full table above shows the fixed amount plus the percentage for every slab.

How much tax is deducted from a Rs 100,000 salary in Pakistan?

On Rs 100,000 a month (Rs 1,200,000 a year), tax for 2026-27 is Rs 6,000 a year, or Rs 500 a month. The first Rs 600,000 is tax-free and the next Rs 600,000 is taxed at 1%, giving an effective rate of 0.5% of your salary.

Is a salary of Rs 50,000 a month taxable in Pakistan?

No. Rs 50,000 a month is Rs 600,000 a year, exactly the tax-free limit for salaried individuals in Tax Year 2027, so no income tax is due. Any extra income such as a bonus that takes your annual total above Rs 600,000 is taxed at 1% on the amount above the limit.

How is tax calculated on a bonus in Pakistan?

A bonus is added to your annual salary and taxed under the same slabs; there is no separate bonus rate. Because it raises your yearly income, part of it may fall into a higher slab, which is why the tax withheld in the bonus month often looks larger than usual.

Do the income tax slabs change every year?

Usually, yes. Pakistan revises its salaried tax slabs in the Finance Act passed with each June budget, and the new rates apply from 1 July. This calculator uses the Tax Year 2027 rates from the Finance Act 2026. Always confirm against FBR before filing your return.

Is the 9% surcharge still charged on high salaries?

No. The Finance Act 2026 abolished the 9% surcharge that applied to salaried individuals earning more than Rs 10 million a year. From Tax Year 2027 their tax is worked out from the slab table alone, with 35% as the highest rate, charged on income above Rs 7,000,000.

Does this calculator work for freelancers or business income?

Not accurately. The Pakistan mode uses the salaried slabs only. Freelancers and business individuals are taxed under a different, generally higher schedule, with separate rules for some export services. Use the flat-rate mode for a rough figure, and confirm your category with FBR or a tax adviser.
