How Is Overtime Calculated in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, overtime is paid at double the ordinary rate of wages for work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week (Factories Act 1934, section 47). Divide your monthly wage by your standard monthly hours (usually 208) to get the hourly rate, double it, then multiply by your overtime hours.

How to Use the Overtime Calculator

  1. Enter your monthly wage: basic pay plus regular allowances, without bonuses.
  2. Keep 208 standard hours (48 hours × 4.33 weeks) or enter your employer's base.
  3. Enter the overtime hours you worked in the period.
  4. Leave the multiplier at 2, the legal overtime rate, unless your contract pays more.

Overtime Formula

Worked Example: Rs 70,000 Monthly Wage, 15 Overtime Hours

StepResult
Monthly wage (Rs 60,000 basic + Rs 10,000 allowances)Rs 70,000
Ordinary hourly rate: 70,000 ÷ 208Rs 336.54
Overtime hourly rate: 336.54 × 2Rs 673.08
Overtime pay: 15 × 673.08Rs 10,096

If you used basic pay alone (Rs 60,000), you'd get Rs 8,654, about Rs 1,440 less. That's why it matters which wage figure your employer uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the overtime rate in Pakistan?

The legal overtime rate is twice the ordinary rate of wages, under section 47 of the Factories Act 1934 and the Shops and Establishments Ordinance 1969. It applies to hours beyond 9 in a day or 48 in a week. An employer or contract can pay more, but not less.

How do I calculate my hourly rate from a monthly salary in Pakistan?

Divide your monthly wage, meaning basic pay plus regular allowances, by your standard monthly hours. For a 48-hour week that is usually 208 hours (48 × 4.33 weeks). A Rs 70,000 monthly wage gives Rs 336.54 an hour, so one hour of overtime at double rate is Rs 673.08.

Is overtime calculated on basic salary or gross salary in Pakistan?

The law uses the ordinary rate of wages, which covers basic pay plus the allowances you normally receive, such as house rent or conveyance, but not bonuses. Some employers wrongly use basic pay alone, which lowers overtime pay, so check which figure your payslip uses.

How many overtime hours are allowed in Pakistan?

In factories, total working time including overtime should not exceed 60 hours in a week, and overtime is commonly capped at around 150 hours a quarter. Shops and establishments rules allow up to about 624 overtime hours a year. Exact caps vary by province.

Is overtime pay time and a half in Pakistan?

No. Time and a half, or 1.5 times pay, is the United States standard under its Fair Labor Standards Act. Pakistan's statutory overtime rate is double, or 2 times, the ordinary rate of wages, so overtime in Pakistan should never be paid at less than twice the normal hourly rate.

Are managers entitled to overtime in Pakistan?

Usually not. Employees in managerial, supervisory or confidential roles are generally excluded from statutory overtime, as are some field roles. Workers in regular roles, including contract and daily-wage workers, are covered. Check your appointment letter and your province's labour law.
