What Is My Age in the Islamic Calendar?

Your Hijri age is your age counted in Islamic lunar years, which average about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. So your Hijri age is always a little higher: you gain about one extra year every 33 years. Someone who is 36 in Gregorian years is usually 37 in Hijri years.

How to Use the Hijri Age Calculator

  1. Enter your date of birth with the calendar picker or by typing the day, month and year.
  2. See your Hijri birth date, your exact Hijri age in years, months and days, and whether you were born in a sacred month.

The formula: Hijri age ≈ Gregorian age × 365.2425 ÷ 354.367, or about × 1.0307. For your exact figure, the calculator converts both your birth date and today's date to the Hijri calendar and counts the difference.

Worked Example

Born 15 June 1990: that's 22 Dhul Qa'dah 1410 AH in the calculator's calendar. On 25 September 2026 the person is 36 years, 3 months and 10 days old by the Gregorian calendar, but 37 Hijri years, 4 months and 21 days old by the Islamic calendar.

Why Your Hijri Date Can Differ by a Day

There is more than one way to fix Islamic dates. This calculator uses the tabular (arithmetic) Islamic calendar, a fixed 30-year cycle of 354- and 355-day years. Saudi Arabia's official Umm al-Qura calendar is based on astronomical calculation, while Pakistan's official dates follow local moon sighting. As a result a date can differ by a day, occasionally two. For the example above, Umm al-Qura gives 21 Dhul Qa'dah rather than the 22nd. For religious dates, follow your local authority's announcement.

Why People Check Their Hijri Age

For your regular age down to the day, use the age calculator; to count down to your next Gregorian birthday, try the birthday countdown; or see how Hijri age fits with your generation and zodiac in the birthday calculator.

The Four Sacred Months

The calculator flags whether you were born in one of the four sacred months named in the Qur'an (9:36): Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa'dah and Dhul Hijjah. It also shows your Manazil al-Qamar, one of the 28 lunar mansions used in classical Arabic astronomy. It is included as a traditional reference point, not a religious ruling.

To convert any date in either direction, read how to convert your birthday to the Hijri calendar.

How the Hijri Age Calculator Works

Your Gregorian date of birth is converted to a Hijri date with the tabular (arithmetic) Islamic calendar: a 30-year cycle with 11 leap years, and months that alternate between 30 and 29 days. Your Hijri age is then counted in Islamic years, which are about 11 days shorter than solar years, so your Hijri age is usually a little higher. Countries that follow local moon sighting or the Umm al-Qura calendar may date things a day earlier or later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Hijri age higher than my normal age?

Hijri years are lunar and average about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than Gregorian years. Those missing days add up, so every 33 Gregorian years contain about 34 Hijri years. A 30-year-old is about 30.9 in Hijri years, and a 60-year-old about 61.8.

How do I calculate my age in Hijri years?

Convert your date of birth and today's date to the Hijri calendar, then subtract as you would for a normal age: years, then months, then days. For a quick estimate, multiply your Gregorian age by about 1.0307. The calculator above does the exact conversion for you.

Why does my Hijri birth date differ by one day from other sites?

Different sites use different methods. This calculator uses the tabular Islamic calendar; others use Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar or local moon sighting, which Pakistan follows officially. The same Gregorian date can therefore fall a day apart in the Hijri calendar. Neither is wrong; they are different conventions.

How many Hijri years are in 33 Gregorian years?

About 34. A Gregorian year averages 365.2425 days and a Hijri year about 354.367 days, so 33 Gregorian years equal roughly 12,053 days, which is almost exactly 34 Hijri years. That is also why Ramadan moves through every season over about 33 years.

Can I convert a Hijri date of birth to Gregorian?

Yes. Use the Hijri to Gregorian converter on this page: enter the Hijri day, month and year and it shows the matching Gregorian date. If you only know the Hijri year, enter the 1st of Muharram as a placeholder and treat the result as an approximation.

What are the sacred months in Islam?

The four sacred months named in the Qur'an (9:36) are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa'dah and Dhul Hijjah. Ramadan is the month of fasting and is highly honoured, but it is not one of the four sacred months. The calculator shows whether your Hijri birth month is one of them.
