How Do I Convert Units?

Pick a category, choose the unit you have and the unit you want, then type the value; the answer appears as you type, and you can type in either box to convert backwards. The key factors: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 kg = 2.205 lb, 1 mile = 1.609 km, and °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.

Divide centimetres by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12 for feet; the remainder is inches. Feet-and-inches values are rounded to the nearest inch.

What You Can Convert

The data category uses 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, the binary convention used by most operating systems. Drive makers often use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, which is why a new drive can show less space than its label.

Working out your BMI? The BMI calculator takes kg or lb directly. For maths beyond conversions, use the scientific calculator or the percentage calculator.

How to Use the Unit Converter

  1. Choose what you are converting, such as length, weight, temperature or data size.
  2. Type the value in the From box and pick its unit.
  3. Pick the unit you want in the To box; the answer appears instantly.
  4. Type in the To box instead to convert in the other direction.

How the Unit Converter Works

Most conversions are a single multiplication by a fixed, defined factor: 1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm, 1 kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds and 1 mile is about 1.609 km. Temperature is the exception, because the scales start from different zero points, so it uses a formula instead: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Data sizes use the binary convention common in operating systems, where 1 GB is 1,024 MB.

Looking up a factor, multiplying on a phone and rounding takes a minute and is easy to get wrong by a power of ten. Here the answer appears as you type, in both directions, with no factor to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert cm to inches?

Divide the number of centimetres by 2.54, because one inch is exactly 2.54 cm. For example, 170 cm ÷ 2.54 = 66.9 inches. To show that as a height, divide by 12: 66.9 inches is 5 feet 6.9 inches, which rounds to 5 ft 7 in.

How do I convert kg to lbs?

Multiply kilograms by 2.205, since one kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds. So 70 kg × 2.205 = 154.3 lb. To go from pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.205 or multiply by 0.4536. Choose the Weight category above for an exact answer.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. For example, 25 °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 77 °F. To go the other way, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value and multiply by 5/9. Body temperature, 37 °C, is 98.6 °F.

How do I convert km to miles?

Divide kilometres by 1.609, since one mile is exactly 1.609344 km. A 5 km run is about 3.11 miles, 10 km is 6.21 miles and a 42.195 km marathon is 26.22 miles. To turn miles into kilometres, multiply by 1.609.

Can I convert in both directions?

Yes. Type a number in either the From box or the To box and the other one updates straight away. You can also press the swap button to flip the two units, which is handy when you need a conversion both ways.

Why is a gigabyte 1,024 megabytes here?

The converter uses binary units, where each step up is 1,024 times larger, as most computers report storage. Hard drive makers usually use decimal units of 1,000, so a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB. Both conventions are in common use.
