How Do I Find the Aspect Ratio of an Image?

Divide the width and the height by their greatest common divisor. A 1920 x 1080 image divides by 120 to give 16:9; a 1080 x 1350 post divides by 270 to give 4:5. Enter any size above and the calculator shows the ratio, the decimal value and the matching size at a new width or height, so the picture is never stretched.

How to use the calculator

  1. Type the current width and height in pixels, or tap a platform size such as Instagram Portrait post.
  2. Read the aspect ratio (for example 16:9) and its decimal value.
  3. Type a new width to get the matching height, or a new height to get the width.

The Resize Formula

To keep the same shape, scale both sides by the same factor:

Worked example: a 1920 x 1080 video resized to 1280 px wide becomes 1280 x 1080 ÷ 1920 = 720 px high, so 1280 x 720, still 16:9. A 4:5 Instagram post made 1080 px wide needs 1080 x 5 ÷ 4 = 1350 px of height.

Social Media Image and Video Sizes (2026)

Recommended sizes in pixels, width x height. Platforms change these from time to time, so check the platform's own guidance if an upload looks cropped.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate an aspect ratio?

Divide the width and the height by their greatest common divisor. For 1920 x 1080 the greatest common divisor is 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator does this for any size and also shows the ratio as a decimal (1.78 for 16:9).

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Keep the same ratio: new height = new width x (ratio height / ratio width). To make a 16:9 image 1280 px wide, the height is 1280 x 9 / 16 = 720 px. Changing only one side, or typing both sides freely, stretches the picture.

What aspect ratio is best for Instagram?

Portrait 4:5 (1080 x 1350 px) takes up the most space in the feed and is the usual choice for photos and carousels. Instagram also accepts 3:4 (1080 x 1440), square 1:1 and 1.91:1 landscape. Stories and Reels use 9:16 (1080 x 1920).

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280 x 720 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, the same shape as a standard video. Make sure important text and faces sit away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length.

Is 1080 x 1920 the same as 9:16?

Yes. 1080 and 1920 share the divisor 120, which gives 9:16, the vertical full-screen shape used by Stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

Why does my upload still get cropped?

Platforms crop to their own frame and sometimes overlay buttons, captions or profile pictures. Use the recommended size, keep text and faces in the centre, and check the preview before publishing. Sizes also change over time, so check the platform if a format looks wrong.
