How Long Should an Essay Be? Word Counts by Essay Type

How Long Should an Essay Be? Word Counts by Essay Type

Most essays are 500 to 5,000 words, depending on the level. A typical high school essay is 300 to 1,000 words, a college application essay is at most 650 words on the Common App, an undergraduate essay is usually 1,500 to 5,000 words, and graduate papers run longer. If your assignment gives a word or page limit, that limit always wins.

Below is a quick guide by essay type, how word counts convert to pages and paragraphs, and what to do if you’re over or under.

Essay Length by Level and Type

Essay type Typical length
Five-paragraph essay (high school) 500 to 800 words
High school essay (general) 300 to 1,000 words
College application personal statement (Common App) 250 to 650 words
Supplemental college essays Often 150 to 350 words
Undergraduate essay 1,500 to 5,000 words
Graduate school essay or seminar paper 2,500 to 6,000 words
Graduate school application statement 500 to 1,000 words
Undergraduate dissertation (UK) 8,000 to 15,000 words
Master’s dissertation (UK) 15,000 to 20,000 words

These are typical ranges, not rules. Universities and departments set their own limits, so always check the brief.

Words to Pages and Paragraphs

In 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, a double-spaced page holds about 250 words and a single-spaced page about 500. A standard academic paragraph is about 100 to 200 words.

Words Double-spaced pages Paragraphs (approx.)
500 2 3 to 5
1,000 4 5 to 8
1,500 6 8 to 12
2,500 10 13 to 20
5,000 20 25 to 40

How to Split Your Word Count

A reliable rule of thumb for planning an essay’s structure:

  • Introduction: about 10% of the total
  • Body: about 80%, divided between your main points
  • Conclusion: about 10%

For a 2,000-word essay that’s roughly a 200-word introduction, 1,600 words of body (say four sections of 400 words), and a 200-word conclusion.

How Strict Are Word Limits?

Many universities allow a margin of around 10% either side of the stated word count, but others treat the limit as a hard maximum and deduct marks or stop reading beyond it. If the brief doesn’t say, ask. The Common App’s 650-word limit is enforced by the form itself: you can’t paste in more.

Not sure what counts? Reference lists are almost always excluded, while in-text citations usually count. See does word count include citations.

If You’re Over or Under the Limit

Too long: cut repeated points, long quotations and filler phrases (“it is important to note that”, “in today’s society”), and make sure every paragraph serves your argument.

Too short: don’t pad. Add depth instead: another piece of evidence, a counter-argument and your response to it, or a clearer explanation of why a point matters.
