How Many Work Hours Are in a Year? (2026 and 2027, US and UK)

How Many Work Hours Are in a Year? (2026 and 2027, US and UK)

The quick answer most people quote is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. But that number assumes you work every weekday of the year, with no public holidays and no vacation. Take those out and a full-time US worker actually works closer to 1,900 to 2,000 hours, and a typical UK worker on 37.5 hours a week works around 1,750.

Here’s the full breakdown for 2026 and 2027, for both countries, and how to work out your own number.

Work Hours in 2026 and 2027 at a Glance

2026 2027
Weekdays (Mon–Fri) 261 261
Weekday hours at 8 h/day 2,088 2,088
US business days (after federal holidays) 250 249
US work hours at 8 h/day 2,000 1,992
England & Wales business days (after bank holidays) 253 253
UK work hours at 7.5 h/day (37.5 h week) 1,897.5 1,897.5

These are hours available to work after public holidays but before any vacation or sick days. 2027 has one fewer US business day than usual because New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so the federal holiday is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. Our guide to business days in 2027 lists every holiday and a month-by-month count.

Where the 2,080 Figure Comes From

52 weeks × 40 hours = 2,080. It’s the number most payroll systems and salary converters use, because it’s simple and it’s what a salaried employee is effectively paid for: US federal holidays and paid vacation are paid time, even though no work is done. So 2,080 is right for “how many hours am I paid for” and wrong for “how many hours do I actually work”.

(There’s a small wrinkle too: a year is 52 weeks and one or two days, so most years have 261 weekdays, or 2,088 weekday hours, not exactly 2,080.)

Hours Actually Worked, After Vacation

Subtract your paid time off to get hours genuinely worked:

Situation (2026) Calculation Hours worked
US, 40 h/week, 10 days PTO (250 − 10) × 8 1,920
US, 40 h/week, 15 days PTO (250 − 15) × 8 1,880
UK, 37.5 h/week, 20 days leave + bank holidays (253 − 20) × 7.5 1,747.5
UK, 40 h/week, 20 days leave + bank holidays (253 − 20) × 8 1,864

In the UK, most full-time workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (28 days for a five-day week), and employers can count the eight bank holidays as part of that. So “20 days plus bank holidays” is the common minimum. In the US there’s no federal requirement for paid vacation, so PTO varies widely by employer.

How to Work Out Your Own Annual Hours

  1. Start with working days: 261 weekdays in 2026 and 2027 (use 260 or 262 for other years).
  2. Subtract public holidays that fall on your working days: 11 US federal holidays in 2026 and 12 in 2027 (including Dec 31), or 8 bank holidays in England and Wales.
  3. Subtract your paid leave (vacation days).
  4. Multiply by your daily hours.

If you work part-time or a non-standard week, count your actual working days instead. The Business Days Calculator counts working days between any two dates, lets you exclude holidays, and supports a six-day week.

Converting a Salary to an Hourly Rate

Which hours figure you divide by changes your “real” hourly rate:

  • $60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85 an hour: the standard payroll rate.
  • $60,000 ÷ 1,920 hours = $31.25 an hour: what you earn per hour actually worked, with 10 days’ PTO and federal holidays off.

For job offers or freelance quotes, the second figure is the fairer comparison. Our Finance Converter switches a salary between annual, monthly, weekly, daily and hourly figures.
