Healthy Weight for Height Chart (lb and kg)

Healthy Weight for Height Chart (lb and kg)

A healthy weight for your height is any weight that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, at 5’6″ (168 cm) that’s about 115–154 lb (52–70 kg), and at 5’10” (178 cm) about 129–174 lb (58–79 kg). The chart below covers heights from 4’10” to 6’4″ in pounds and kilograms. The range is wide on purpose: frame size, muscle and age all affect what’s healthy for you.

How the Chart Is Calculated

Healthy weight = BMI × height² (in metres). For 1.70 m tall: 18.5 × 1.70² = 53.5 kg at the low end and 24.9 × 1.70² = 72.0 kg at the high end. To convert to pounds, multiply by 2.205. Need to convert height? Use the Unit Converter or the height chart in cm and feet.

Where in the Range Should You Be?

  • Small frame or little muscle: nearer the lower half can be healthy.
  • Large frame or very muscular: the upper half, or even slightly above, may be fine.
  • Older adults: staying well above the bottom of the range helps protect against frailty.
  • Asian backgrounds: health risks start at lower BMIs, so the lower part of the range is often recommended.

Waist size adds useful context: health risk rises above about 88 cm (35 in) for women and 102 cm (40 in) for men. See what your BMI should be for your age.

If You’re Outside the Range

  • Above: losing 5–10% of your weight brings real health benefits; you don’t need to reach the “ideal” number to benefit.
  • Below: talk to a doctor, especially if weight loss was unintended.
  • Track trends, not single weigh-ins; weight can swing 1–2 kg a day with water and food.

Other Ways to Judge a Healthy Weight

Because BMI can’t tell muscle from fat, it helps to check one more measure. The waist-to-height ratio is simple: divide your waist measurement by your height in the same units. A result below 0.5 (your waist less than half your height) is generally considered healthy for adults. Body fat percentage, measured by a scale, callipers or a scan, adds detail too. Use the chart as a starting point, then look at the whole picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy weight for 5’5″?

About 111–150 lb (50–68 kg), based on a BMI of 18.5–24.9.

What is a healthy weight for 170 cm?

About 53–72 kg.

Is the healthy weight chart the same for men and women?

Yes, the BMI-based ranges are the same. Men often sit higher in the range because of more muscle.

How accurate is a height and weight chart?

It’s a good general guide, but it can’t tell muscle from fat. Waist size and how you feel and function matter too.
