The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools say jewellery genuinely worn for permissible personal adornment is exempt. All four agree that jewellery kept as savings or investment, or never worn, is zakatable at 2.5% of its value.

This guide sets out both views, the conditions the majority attach to the exemption, and how to calculate zakat on jewellery if it’s due.

The Two Main Views

School

Jewellery worn for personal use

Reasoning in brief

Hanafi

Zakatable

Gold and silver are money by nature, whatever shape they’re in, so their form doesn’t remove the obligation.

Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali

Not zakatable, within limits

Items in genuine personal use, like clothes, a home or a car, are outside zakat, and reports describe Companions wearing gold jewellery without paying zakat on it.

Both positions have been held by serious scholars for centuries and are followed by large communities today. Neither is a fringe view. If you’re unsure which applies to you, follow the school you normally follow or ask a scholar you trust.

When Even the Majority Say Zakat Is Due

The exemption in the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools isn’t unconditional. Jewellery is generally treated as ordinary zakatable gold or silver when:

It’s kept as savings or investment, for example bought to hold value or sell later.

It’s never or rarely worn, sitting in a safe for years.

The quantity is far beyond normal use, so it looks more like stored wealth than adornment.

Gold and silver in other forms, such as coins, bars and savings in gold, are zakatable in every school.

How to Calculate Zakat on Jewellery

Weigh the gold or silver in each piece, leaving out stones, and note its purity: 22 karat gold is 22/24 pure (about 91.7%), 18 karat is 18/24 (75%).

Value it at today’s price. Either multiply the weight by the current price per gram for that karat, or multiply the pure weight by the 24 karat price; both give the same answer. Don’t add making charges, brand mark-up or sentimental value, only the metal.

Add your other zakatable wealth: cash, savings, other gold and silver, business stock and money owed to you, less debts due now.

Check against nisab. The gold standard is about 85–87.48 g of gold and the silver standard about 595–612.36 g of silver; different authorities use slightly different weights.

Pay 2.5% of the total if it’s at or above nisab and a lunar year (hawl) has passed.

Example (Hanafi view): you wear bangles containing 40 g of 22 karat gold (about 36.7 g of pure gold). If 22 karat gold sells for 90 per gram in your currency, the bangles are worth 40 × 90 = 3,600. Added to 6,000 of savings, your total is 9,600. If that’s above nisab, zakat is 9,600 × 2.5% = 240. Under the majority view, and if the bangles are genuinely worn, you’d count only the 6,000 of savings.

The free zakat calculator has separate fields for gold and silver jewellery, so you can include or leave out worn jewellery according to the view you follow.

Gold Standard or Silver Standard?

Because silver is much cheaper than gold, the silver nisab is a far lower threshold, so more people owe zakat under it. Many scholars recommend the silver standard for cash savings because it benefits more people in need; others use gold. Our guide to zakat nisab: gold standard vs silver standard explains the choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is zakat due on gold jewellery that I wear every day?

Under the Hanafi school, yes, at 2.5% of the gold’s value if your total zakatable wealth reaches nisab. Under the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools, jewellery genuinely worn for permissible adornment is exempt, unless it’s kept as savings, rarely worn or excessive in amount.

Do I pay zakat on the stones in my jewellery?

No. Zakat on jewellery is based on its gold or silver content. Diamonds, gemstones and pearls in personal jewellery are not zakatable in themselves, unless you hold them as trade stock for sale.

Is zakat calculated on the price I paid or today’s value?

On today’s value, at the time your zakat is due, using the current price of the metal for its purity. Making charges, design and what you originally paid don’t count.

What about jewellery I’ve given to my daughter?

Zakat is due from the owner. If the jewellery has been given and now belongs to her, it’s counted with her wealth, not yours. If you still own it and have only set it aside for her, it’s still yours to count.

Work out what you owe on cash, savings, gold and silver with the free zakat calculator, and read how to calculate zakat on gold, silver and savings for the full method.

Sources: summaries of the four schools’ positions from ZakatHisab and Musaffa Academy.
