1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced, or 4 pages double-spaced, in a standard 12-point font such as Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. With 1.5 line spacing it’s about 3 pages, and handwritten it’s roughly 4 to 5 pages. It takes the average adult about 4 minutes to read.
Below is a quick-reference table for other word counts, what changes the page count, and how long each length takes to read or say out loud.
How Many Words Are on a Page?
The standard planning figures, for 12-point Times New Roman or Arial on a letter or A4 page with 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins:
- Single-spaced: about 500 words per page
- 1.5-spaced: about 330 words per page
- Double-spaced: about 250 words per page
- Handwritten (lined paper): about 200 to 250 words per page, depending on your handwriting
So the formula is simply: pages = word count ÷ words per page. For 1,000 words double-spaced: 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 pages.

What Changes the Page Count
- Font. Wider fonts such as Arial or Verdana fit fewer words per line than Times New Roman, so the same text runs slightly longer. Calibri 11 (Word’s old default) fits more.
- Font size. Going from 12 to 14 point can add close to a page per 1,000 words.
- Margins. Wider margins mean shorter lines and more pages.
- Headings, paragraphs and dialogue. Every new paragraph and heading leaves white space, so a list-heavy report or a dialogue-heavy story fills more pages than a dense essay.
- Title page and references. These add pages but usually aren’t counted in a word limit. See what counts toward a word count.
If your assignment gives a page count instead of a word count, check whether it expects single or double spacing. It doubles the amount of writing you need.
How Long Does 1,000 Words Take to Read or Say?
- Reading silently: about 4 minutes (238 words per minute)
- Reading aloud: about 5½ minutes (183 words per minute)
- As a speech or presentation: about 7 minutes, at a typical 130 to 150 words per minute
Working the other way, a 5-minute speech is about 650 to 750 words, and a 10-minute speech is about 1,300 to 1,500 words.
